Forum of opinions - Yung Ho Chang

I’m an architect based in Beijing. I have been practicing architecture for the past ten years in Beijing and before that, I taught in architecture schools in the US.

- The exhibition and the web page are about "exchange" through the discipline of architecture. What do you think about the concept of "exchange" and its possibilities?

I think the notion of exchange, cultural exchange in fact, is extremely important today because I don’t think people automatically would develop more understanding towards each other, if you see all the wars happening in different regions of the world. It’s very important that people know or try to make an effort to know about what other people think about certain issues. So I think that’s really the significance of having this architectural exhibition at this point in Europe and Asia Pacific; because in a way, these are the two places architecture is extremely active in one way or another.

- Have you so far had good exchanges with the other architects?

I enjoyed very much. Some of these architects are old friends but I also made new friends. I think the idea of having an exhibition collectively is for the architects to meet each other personally and it’s not about how much you can talk in a day or two but rather, you would develop a long-term friendship, and then you can really learn from each other.

- What kind of events would you want to have or do you have any suggestions to enhance this concept of “exchange”?

I really enjoyed everything. The only thing I don’t really understand is why the location of this symposium is so far away. If it was in the city center of Lille, more people can come, like architecture students and that would make a bigger impact.
