EU-Japan Joint Project
"New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Japan 2001"
New Trends of Architecture 2001 is the first in a series of annual events bringing together young European and Japanese architects. Launched by a group of officials from the EU Embassies and Cultural Institutes in Japan and the Delegation of the European Commission, New Trends of Architecture 2001 will bring fifteen promising European architects from each of the EU member States to display their work and share their ideas and experiences with their Japanese counterparts. The fifteen European architects were selected by a commissioning team consisting of two architects from Europe's current cultural capitals alongside a prominent Japanese architect. This year Alvaro Siza of Porto and Wiel Arets of Rotterdam were participated from the European side with Fumihiko Maki acting as the Japanese commissioner. Maki and Siza are both Pritzker Architecture Prize laureates. The commissioning team also selected five leading Japanese architects to participate in the event. The twenty architects and the three commissioners will take part in a Symposium to be held at Tokyo's Hillside Plaza on Saturday June 2. Work by the twenty architects will be on display throughout June at Hillside Forum. The exhibition will then travel to Porto and Rotterdam.
