The 10 year long journey will reach the final venue: Lisbon
We are pleased to announce that the New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia-Pacific 2008-2010 will be held at Museu do Oriente in Lisbon October 22, 2010 through January 9, 2011.
Ten years ago, this project was launched among the group of European Cultural Counsellors in Tokyo during the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union as part of the “Decade of Japan-European Cooperation”. Its first edition was presented in Europe for the first time in Porto, the European Capital of Culture 2001 and now it will complete a decade and will come to an end in Lisbon where 150 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and Portugal are celebrated.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our deep gratitude to the Lisbon organizers as well as all those involved in all the five editions of the project: the commissioners, the participating architects, the host cities and institutions, the diplomats, and so on.

"New Trends of Architecture" in Istanbul will run until April 10.
“New Trends of Architecture” in Istanbul, the First Architectural Exhibition of the 2010 European Capital of Culture, was launched.

Organized by Arkitera Architecture Center in collaboration with Istanbul Milli Reasurans Art Gallery, “New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia-Pacific” exhibition opened on March 9th, 2010 with a special event. The opening symposium of the exhibition was held on the same day. Turkish architect Han Tümertekin is also among the participants of the exhibition, which includes architects’ works from Asia and Europe and is realized with supports of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency.

Wong Mun Summ – WOHA, Singapore
The first speaker of the symposium was the Singaporean architect Wong Mun Summ who shared the tangible reflections of his architecture, showing some examples of the office’s high rise building designs. The Newton Suites in Singapore was one of these having “green” as an integrated part of design and therefore being an ecological building.

About Bras Basah MRT Station Project, Summ explained the first aim of the design as “enabling people to move faster and easier on the topography”. This approach made it possible for the daylight to reach even the basement thanks to the glass floor coverings.

Creating a public space similar to the Times Square in New York, was the designer’s main concept in Iluma Entertainment Center project in Singapore. Bright lighting equipments are important features of the design, in which also “crystal webs” installed on the facade of the building form a media screen that shows both textual and visual extracts from students’ and artists’ artworks, and therefore being some kind of exhibition surface.

Alila Villas Uluwatu Hotel in Bali is a building with the “Green Gold” certificate. Summ underlined that its design was based on wastewater treatment and reuse systems, using timber and materials from local resources, which resulted in a project that reflects ecological principles.

A still ongoing project, The School of Arts in Singapore is another one the designer aimed to create sustainable spaces with the guidance of ecological design. According to Summ, with vertical greens and natural ventilation, the building will be an healthy space for living.

Bernardo Rodrigues, Portugal
The Portuguese architect presented six of his small scaled projects. The first one was the Chapel of the Sky in St. Miguel Island, constructed in 1999. Integrated with nature, the project symbolizes the relation between the sun and water.

The Chapel of the Eternal Light enables the user to watch light’s activities by means of the metal, marble and glass brought together in the walls.

House on the Flight of Birds’ design was based on tectonics. The buildings consist of three storeys.

House Mask & Mirror stands on the shore of the ocean. Its design has a very intense relationship with the ocean and it was built to used as a theatre.

The housing project Opus Lusa was built with a very limited budget. Its roof was covered with cork tiles and plant and water elements are generously used.

The Opus Magma was built in 2009 and its base is set on the rocks. The building’s relation with the water is an important aspect of the design approach and its design forms an acoustic shell.

Reinhard Kropf - Helen&Hard AS, Norway
Mr. Kropf started his presentation emphasizing that they always relate their designs with certain contexts and sources, aiming to create a relational and specific architecture.

In the Art Project in Monifesta, they created living opportunities for microorganisms with the materials used in the walls.

Their Dancing Willows project is a pavilion for playing games. Constructed with wooden materials, a childrens’ playground was created.

The Norwegian Pavilion in Shanghai EXPO was based on the idea of the “sustainable city”. It’s design was made to make possible to use the pavilion elsewhere.

Helen&Hard got the National Architecture Award with their Pulpit Rock Mountain Lodge project. Timber is the main material of the building, which does not contain any artificial components like plastics or glue. The building also has a tectonic presence due to its design in harmony with the topography.

The Base Camp project consists of four little cottages constructed of wood and covered with cotton fabric. The design’s aim was to provide children a natural playing atmosphere that is comfortable and safe at the same time.

Kropf’s last project in the presentation was the park near the Oil Industry Headquarters in Stavanger. The project’s construction was based on the idea of reusing the waste materials of the oil platform.

Han Tümertekin, Turkey
The only Turkish architect in the exhibition, Han Tümertekin started his presentation with some aspects that formed his architectural approach. He stated that he has started to think about design with the question “What is really needed?”, and talked about seven of his projects.

One of his housing projects was built on a wooded land. On every point where a tree stood, they created openings, “courtyards” within the building. So, a building with a facade lenghth of 80 meters was created. Every window without a blocking feature in its front has a sea view.

With the santralistanbul project, an old power station was transformed into a museum. With a pedestrian platform located over the machines, users are able to experience the space.

In the social center project of a steel factory, the design was based on prisms. Semi-open spaces were created by making shifts on round prisms.

In the Cafe Turk project in Paris, they aimed to design a multifunctional space that could be used both as a performance area and a restaurant. The wooden cafe is also portable.

With the building project in Galata Square, they again aimed to create multifunctionality with a design oriented towards the tower itself.

In the project with which they took part in the Zorlu competition, they played with the angles to create wide and narrow facade views, because of the building’s location on the central lot.

After the presentations, the symposium went on with the questions of Ömer Kanıpak, the coordinator of Arkitera Architecture Center. His first question to the architects was: ”Can you describe your tendencies towards the architectural trends? Concepts like “iconic”, “sustainable”, “green architecture” simply put away the architectural philosophy. What is architecture as a means for consumption for you?” Han Tümertekin responded that nowadays architectural images are consumed more and more. According to him, the better the image the more it was consumed. Bernardo Rodrigues said that change was a part of our lives, so we have to change. He stated that it was important for a building to sustain its existence, but at the same time this created a paradox. Reinhard Kropf underlined that what was “authentic”, was also interesting and that architecture always has to be created in relation to the environmental and social aspects. He said that the context was far more important than the image. Lastly, Wong Mun Summ implied that although sustainability is of great importance, these trends will not last for long periods of time and be replaced by others.

Another question of Mr. Kanıpak aimed to learn the architects’ opinions about the promotion methods of architectural projects. Kropf responded: “There are a lot of architectural publishings. But the thing is to question constantly. Architecture demands less communication but more mental language.” Rodrigues’ answer was different: ”This is some kind of paranoia, actually. We can’t filter the media. And they are very eager to show what’s bad. The promotion should happen on its own.” Summ stated that imaging was something which could so easily be manipulated. He went on: “It would be not bad if there were less periodicals. The relation between me and my client is a very personal one.” Tümertekin continued: “Architects do like to talk. And people to publish it... I think we have to remain silent a little...”

The New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia-Pacific exhibition symposium ended with questions from the audience. The exhibition will remain open until April 10th, 2010 at Istanbul Milli Reasürans Art Gallery.

The fifth and final series of“New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia-Pacific” was launched
On the 5th December, 2009, the fifth and final series of “New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia-Pacific” was launched at Hillside Terrace, Tokyo, with the attendance of 150 guests. The opening reception marked the beginning of the final phase of a decade-long project that has been organized since 2001. Mr. Hakuo Yanagisawa, parliamentarian and the Chairman of the Japan Committee, and Mr. Hugh Richardson, Ambassador of European Union to Japan, made an opening remark and appreciated the efforts of the organisers, the Commissioners, the host cities, and the participating architects. The commissioners, Sir Peter Cook and Mr. Toyo Ito, as well as all 15 groups of architects came together to the Tokyo opening. It was the first time in the New Trends history that all the participants assembled.

On the next day, a symposium was held all day long. Sir Peter Cook made a key-note lecture on “new trends” in architecture and his update projects. He pointed out the international network of elitism in architectural education. Now that architects study and work beyond borders, there are rather common points than differences among them, while they show some localities and specialties. Sir Peter’s presentation with a dramatic gesture conveyed his incessant curiosity and love for architecture to the audience. The participating architects were grouped into four sessions, which were moderated respectively by the Japanese architects who participated in the previous editions: Kazuhiro Kojima, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (Atelier Bow Wow), Masashi Sogabe (Mikan) and Nobuaki Furuya. For each session, the architects including the moderator made a 10-minute presentation on their own work, which were followed by lively discussions. The styles of their presentations showed a great variety and represented their approach to architecture in a sense. After four sessions, Prof. Hiroshi Hara, who acted as the Commissioner of the 3rd edition, made a special presentation on the projects which had not been realized in his nearly half a century career. The accumulation of his unrealized projects was overwhelming, and taught us that the architect always dreams architecture in the real.
As the Commissioner, Mr. Ito concluded the symposium with comments on the presentations and discussions that were made all that day. He was impressed that architecture has been more liberated and freer. Many architects want to create architecture, but at the same time want to destroy its stereotypes. He emphasized that architecture should be fun, make the real more interesting and encourage people. In the end, he projected a tree on the screen to be compared to contemporary architecture which requires generative, unstable, diverse, relative, complicated and dynamic orders.

In addition to the symposium, the overseas architects were invited to universities to give individual lectures. After the Tokyo program, Sir Peter participated in the symposium at Kumamoto Artpolis
for which Mr. Toyo Ito works as the Commissioner.

The exhibition is scheduled to travel to Niigata City in April, 2009 and some cities are considering hosting it. We hope that fruitful discussions and exchanges will be continued and developed until 2010.
